OSX Alarm Clock

Stuck away from home with a dead mobile phone battery, I needed an alarm clock—no sign of it in Date and Time.

The solution: use iCal on the MacBook. Set an event at the time you want the alarm. Set up an alarm action to open a suitably noisy audio file (which will open with iTunes if you have the default setup).

Make sure you set the alarm to go off on date (not 15 minutes beforehand as I first did). Make sure the volume is set high, headphones removed. Leave the lid open and, preferably, power connected. The alarm will wake the laptop from sleep, and play your song.

Update 2009-02-15 In Leopard 10.5.6 the alarm does not wake your computer from sleep :-( In System Preferences >> Energy Saver >> Schedule, set your computer to wake a couple of minutes before the alarm goes off.

If you subscribe to any external calendars, set iCal offline — otherwise any alerts complaining that some calendar is unreachable will prevent the alarm from sounding.

why have so many people not thought of this?! I'm in the exact same situation if there is anything that you should consider a useful app it's one that is provided with your os!

Hi all,
could anyone tell me why my computer does not wake from sleep when i set a new event-alarm? is it only the screen tha awakes in case or should the HD also? what am i doing wrong?

I just tried this and it doesn't wake up my computer from sleep :(

Since !0.5.6 it seems that the iCal alarm isn't enough to wake the Leopard.

Setting the Energy Saver to wake the computer is a kludge - but it works!

Genius times two!!!

Excellent!

I'm going to use this when I'm working on the couch and I just get sleeeeepy and need to take a nap. In that case, I'm not going to change the Energy Saver settings, but simply turn on the Jiggler app if I only want to rest my eyes for awhile.

Forget iCal. This is all you need and it's free.

i'm hoping this will work on snow leopard too. if i plug it in and just turn my brightness down to 0 iCal should just make the noise anyway shouldn't it?
